Although not without prejudice I have to say what a good job Martin is doing with his new recruits. It is not always a comfortable experience joining a running club for a run, especially when you haven’t really run before; Beth, Janette, Lesley and the two ladies whose names I don’t know looked and sounded like seasoned runners as they finished their run tonight, well done to you all.

Ruth really appreciated the way in which Martin looked after her when she first joined the club. He regularly puts his own training second so that he can support, advise and cajole new runners. Thanks Martin, your unselfish work for the club is appreciated by us all. :D

Yes I echo those comments, Janette's coming on in leaps and bounds. Thank you Martin, I wish I had your patience.

Sometimes these things speak for themselves... :)

The latest group of Martins runners did just over 10KM tonight in sub 10min/miles.

I can't decide who's most shocked, Beth or me

Another fine job Mr Stirna Sir. (and Simon)

Great running ladies :D

Is anybody running next week. I've been contacted by a lady who runs 3 miles in 30 minutes - do you think she'd fit in with the group at this point in time?

I'm sure Lesley and the others are running and would be happy for her to join them. 10 min miles is probably close to race pace though.

Martin can be very proud - I ran my 10k today - the Oxford Town & Gown.
I set myself 3 goals (Pat's idea)
1 - to run the whole way no stops & no walks :)
2 - to finish in 1hr 15m :?
3 - to finish as close to 1hr 5m as I could

I achieved all 3 goals and finished in 1hr 4m (still awaiting official time from chip website). I'm chuffed to bits with this and I haven't taken my medal off since crossing the finish! :P

Pat says that as I was nearly sick at the end, that makes me a proper runner!

Well done Beth That's fantastic and should motivate the other ladies. I always thought you were a proper runner anyway, it's Pat I'm worried about.

This is the first time that I've seen this thread - I really should visit the Forum site more often!

I am delighted with how all the ladies that have started running with me this year have progressed. Heather, Beth, Anna, Alison, Janette, Lesley and Beth are now all running like seasoned runners and yet it is only a few months ago that they were still taking (planned) walk breaks every three or four minutes.

I think that Beth ran brilliantly both in the Easter Bunny 5k and the Oxford 10K and is right to feel well-pleased with her efforts. I am sure that Lesley and Janette will be able to emulate Beth's feats when they make their own racing debuts as there is very little between the 3 of them in training.

Heather first joined us last year, but had to make a fresh start again this year following a 3 month lay-off following a gall-bladder operation. Heather had a good run last Saturday in the Tatton Race for Life 5k and and has also done several other races this year - like the Muller 10K and the Alsager 5. I must add that she does have a great example to follow in her Mum, Kathy Ling who is trying to run 100 races this year in clebration of her 65th birthday last year and is already up to about 55 for the year. Watch out for Kathy in races - she runs for Wrekin Road Runners and always has a number on her back as well as her front - the number on her back is the number of races run this year to date. Give her a cheer if you see her - she deserves it!

In recent weeks I've had two new recruits in Emma and Gemma. Emma is returning to running after a very long break to start a family and Gemma is new to the sport after starting running on her own after moving back to the area earlier this year. Both started off needing regular walking breaks, but are progressing very well. Gemma did the Trentham Gardens Race for Life on Tuesday in just over 30 mins and is now able to run almost up to the pace of the other girls in the group. Emma is also making good progress and I'm sure will do really well once her leg muscles adjust to the work required to do a continuous run.

I must say that I've been very thankful to Tina and Katherine in recent weeks for being able to run with some of the more seasoned members of my group while I've been concentrating on helping Gemma and Emma to progress.

It has also been great for the group to particiapate in Anne & Lizzie's Tuesday night runs. Anne & Lizzie do a great job for the club in supporting and encouraging the runners that come on their runs and it is a contribution that is generally overlooked because it takes place away from the Vagrants.

I'm proud of all the ladies that started their club running with my group and look forward to seeing what they can all achieve in the future.

Well done Martin, you are leading a very important part of our club which is going from strength to strength. As runners we have a lot in common, the camaraderie, competition, ups and downs in performances and keeping fit (just to mention a few), the speed we run at is irrelevant, it's the running that unites us.

Great stuff.

I've finally worked out how to use the forum. For an It recruiter I'm not very good with computers!!!

I just wanted to say thanksto martin for all his help over the last couple of months. It's difficult to join a club when you don't know anyone and everyone has made me feel so welcolme.....so a big thanks :D
